By Simon Millward
A joyous part of my job is getting into classes to speak with students and watching lessons in action. This week, I dropped into Grade 3 and Grade 4. The Grade 3 students were in their guided reading groups, reading, answering questions, locating keywords in text and making a note of these in their books. The children were very engaged and wanted to share what they were learning.
The Grade 4 students explained to me that they were playing Yahtzee. They had a series of questions, and they had to throw the dice and answer the questions using what they threw. The questions were all centred around place value. They spoke knowledgeably about the game, and they were clearly having a good time applying their place value knowledge to the game.
On Friday, we had our annual Malaysia Day assembly. The performances hailed from both the Elementary school and the Secondary school. This whole school approach brings us all together and showcases our unity as a community. We enjoyed a variety of performances, from a Tribute to P. Ramlee- Kisah Rumah Tangga & Bunyi Gitar from our Secondary orchestra to singing from our Grade 3’s, our grade 5 fashion show, Malay, Chinese and Indian dances from our Secondary students and much more. This was a wonderful event.
This year, we were risk-takers and tried to bring our parent community together to share this celebration in our newly created Phoenix Fanzone. Here, parents could watch the assembly and socialise at the same time. We look forward to hearing how this went and improving on it in future assemblies.
We are looking forward to our activities starting. Sign-ups will close on 17 September 2023, and the activities will start on 25 September 2023. Our sports activities started this week, which is great, and we look forward to updating you as to when the games will be held at IGBIS.
Finally, advanced notice. On Friday, 13 October 2023 we will have our 3 Way and Parent Teacher conferences. More details will be coming out about this. Please make a note of this date.

Hello IGBIS Community!
We have been busy this week! We had our first Class Representatives meeting on Tuesday with a fantastic turnout - I am so grateful to all the parents who have stepped up to be the class rep for their grades. I am thrilled to announce that we have a class rep for every single class this year. You can find the complete list on the PVO website HERE.
Our PVO event today, the Phoenix Fanzone - Malaysia Day Assembly will have taken place by the time you see this message. I hope it went well for all of you and you had a blast! If you have not already, please do fill out the feedback form here.
Our first PVO meeting is on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. This is open to ALL parents and is one of the primary ways we connect with our parents to ensure your voices are heard. On the agenda are workshops for and by parents, events for this year, committees for this year (including social, events, fundraising etc.) and a recap of procedures and protocols for parents. Please RSVP here if you can make it. I strongly encourage all parents to attend - participating in parent activities at school is a well-researched and proven contributor to your child’s success at school!
The PVO Lounge is slowly but surely being transformed into a space that is welcoming for parents. You may book the PVO Lounge for class meetings, meetups with fellow parents, and holding workshops by emailing me at karishma.mcdonald@igbis.edu.my. I can also arrange for snacks and beverages for you at a nominal cost per head (it ranges from RM 4 - RM 10).

From the Counselling Team
Success for all
This morning, the counselling team facilitated a workshop, “Success for All,” to a full room (25 people) of supportive and actively engaged parents. Parents completed an interactive activity to focus on diversity called ‘Step apart - Step together, where they came to the conclusion that we have a lot more in common than we realise, and we should keep that in mind when we meet someone who seems to be different from us. The purpose of the activity was to highlight that when we observe and appreciate the differences in our own children, this helps us to watch for changes or signs that they may require some additional support”. An important focus of the session was on the academic, social and personal challenges that students face and the complications that may result because of these. Participants also learned what support is available at IGBIS and how to access it. The multi-tiered system of support was explained, which led to an in-depth look at Individual Education Plan (IEP), Individual Access Arrangement (IAA), and accommodations vs modifications. One of the big takeaways was helping parents to understand that if they have any prior assessments (Psycho Educational, Medical, Speech Language, Occupational Therapy and Mental health), there are significant benefits in sharing these. All information we have as a school helps us to better support our students. Thank you so much to those of you who joined. Having a full room with so many members of our community warms our hearts. It also helps us feel confident that everyone is informed and aware. We enjoy spending time with you and appreciate your commitment to your kids and the IGBIS community as a whole. When we are in the room with you, we also feel ‘loved’ and appreciated, as is demonstrated by your actions and positive words. Thank You!!

ISTA Inter-Arts Festival
“Celebrating our ability to tune in and connect through the arts.”
IGBIS will be hosting this coming November's ISTA Inter-Arts Festival for Music, Drama and Visual Arts. This time, we will host visiting schools and need families to host these students.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As school year 2023/24 is now underway, our upcoming ISTA festival planning is in full swing. This coming November 23rd to 26th, we will be hosting the International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) Inter-Arts Festival. This prestigious event celebrates the power of the arts and offers our students an incredible platform to explore their talents, creativity, and passion.
The ISTA Inter Arts MYP Festival is an immersive experience that combines the magical realms of music, drama, and visual arts for Grade 6, 7 & 8 students. It brings together students from schools across Asia, fostering collaboration, cultural exchange, and personal growth. We are proud to be hosting this event and providing our students with the chance to engage with a diverse group of talented individuals.
As part of the festival, we have arranged a captivating excursion for our students. They will have the opportunity to explore and appreciate different forms of traditional and contemporary arts, enriching their understanding of artistic expression. This excursion will serve as a source of inspiration, empowering our students to push their boundaries and explore their own creative potentials.
One of the highlights of the ISTA Inter-Arts Festival is the presence of visiting artists and performers. These experts in their respective fields will conduct workshops, mentor our students, and share their insights. This interaction will be invaluable for our students as they gain exposure to new techniques, perspectives, and ideas. These experiences will not only enhance their artistic abilities but also broaden their horizons.
We are delighted that three other esteemed schools from across Asia have already signed up to join us for this event. The collaboration will create a vibrant atmosphere of cultural diversity, fostering connections among our students and their peers from different backgrounds.
We strongly encourage you to support your child's participation in the ISTA Inter-Arts Festival. This event offers a unique platform for them to showcase their talents, gain confidence, and develop skills such as teamwork, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. We strongly believe that their involvement in this festival will contribute to their overall personal and artistic growth.
In addition, the visiting students will require homestay. So we would ask that you please consider hosting two or more students. Homestay is a wonderful and integral part of the international school experience that we hope to reestablish as part of our school traditions. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about and showcase our cultures too.
Thank you for your continued support of our school's commitment to fostering artistic expression and igniting the creative minds of our students. We look forward to working with you to make the ISTA Inter-Arts Festival a resounding success.
