By Sandy van Nooten
It has been another busy month at IGBIS. We’ve held full Mock exams for our Grade 12 and Grade 10 students as one step in their preparation for the looming finals. There is naturally some anxiety for students as they prepare, write and reflect on their performance. The Mocks are early enough to give them time to learn or re-learn concepts and skills, and late enough that it feels ‘real’. In addition to the Mocks, we’ve held orals for all our Grade 12 language classes. These orals are recorded and sent to the IB for grading for moderation.
3WCs for Semester 2
This is the first year we’ve run full 3-Way-Conferences during the 2nd semester. We collected feedback from parents and teachers and the response was overwhelmingly positive to do one full round of 3WCs each semester moving forward. Thanks to everyone who scheduled and attended conferences.
Alumni Talks

🎓 IGBIS Alumni Talks – Learning from Those Who’ve Walked the Path 🎓
March 13, 2025 was a very exciting moment, as Grade 9, 10 and 11 students were able to connect with and learn from some of our IGBIS Alumni.
We were incredibly fortunate to host three alumni virtually, Easha (Class of 2019), Sebastian (Class of 2019) and Phoebe (Class of 2021). All of these amazing individuals took time out of their busy schedule to write, prepare and record speeches to share with our current IGBIS students. They also recorded responses to a few specific questions which students from the Secondary school in IGBIS submitted a few weeks prior.
Alongside this, we were even more humbled and grateful to one alumnus, Vanessa (Class of 2021), who traveled all the way from Singapore, on a bus, in order to speak to our students face-to-face and take part in a live Q&A session.
All of our alumni shared firsthand experiences about:
- Their final years in high school
- Selecting universities and navigating applications
- Moving away from home and adjusting to independence
- How their time at IGBIS prepared them for university life
- The invaluable life lessons they’ve learned along the way
- (For some) Their current job search and career journey
Hearing real, relatable stories from those who were once in their shoes gave our students invaluable insights into what awaits them beyond high school.
The session ended with a lively and engaging Q&A, where students actively participated, asking a number of insightful questions which helped them to make relevant and informed decisions for their own future endeavours.
At IGBIS, we firmly believe that "knowledge is power." The more information, exposure, and experiences our counselling team can facilitate, the more questions students can explore - ultimately empowering them to make informed decisions that truly align with who they are and where they want to go.
But knowledge shouldn’t come from just one source. A core aspect of our future-planning philosophy is recognising that learning from diverse perspectives is crucial. That’s why we are passionate about building connections and fostering a strong community.

Inter-School Science Conference
A group of our students participated in the Inter-School Science Conference at Garden International School on 16 March 2025. There were 93 participants from 26 teams representing seven schools. Students prepared presentations with solutions to real-life questions:
- What’s the biggest obstacle to solving climate change, & what can be done to tackle it?
- Implementation of AI and technology in marine exploration - how can it be used?
We were represented by 11 IGBIS students from Grade 9 to 11. Iris and Alia from Grade 9; Dan, Lian, Joshua, Yoona, and Artem from Grade 10; and Daeun, Jea-Kyung, Carydee, Nayeon, and Brinda from Grade 11. Leading up to the event they researched solutions, collaborated, experimented, and on the day, delivered their pitches with confidence in front of fellow participants and judging panels.
IGBIS secured first prize in one of the groups, with Daeun, Nayeon, Iris, and Alia and their ‘Aquanova’ innovation earning the top spot. All of our students represented IGBIS exceptionally well, and seized the opportunity to interact with other students with similar passions and interests.

Student Led Conferences
A reminder that we have our Student Led Conferences (SLCs) on Saturday 19th April. In Secondary. All Grade 6 to 10 students will prepare a 20-minute showcase of their learning. During these conferences, parents will have the choice to attend the conference in person at school, or online via GoogleMeet. Grade 11 students do not participate in SLCs, instead, they will be at school for the whole morning preparing for The Phoenix Talks.
‘The Future’ - Grade 10 Drama Performance
On Wednesday, the 19th of March, three courageous Grade 10 students shared their e-portfolio performances with the school community in our black box area of the theatre. They presented their versions of ‘The Future,’ supported by the other students in their drama class during the second half of lunch. An appreciative audience lent their voices to the Q&A session which followed. A big thank you to the audience and all those who participated in this event.
Bufori Factory Field Trip
The EViE race team visited the Bufori factory in Kepong to explore the origins and engineering behind their EViE race car. Students experienced firsthand how Bufori meticulously builds cars by hand and observed expert restoration work on classics like the iconic 1969 Ford Mustang.
As part of their preparations for the upcoming EViE race on June 14th, the team must compile a detailed portfolio covering Bufori's history, racing dynamics, aerodynamics, and innovative car designs. The factory tour provided valuable insights and a significant head start towards securing another victory!

SASMO Math Competition

We have run 4 Math contests so far this academic year. We started off the year by participating in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10, followed by the AMC 8. This contest was written by 30 of our students. After this, all students in Grades 9-11 participated in the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat contests from Waterloo University. Most recently, we had around 50 students from Grades 3-11 participate in the Singapore and Asian Schools Maths Olympiad (SASMO) competition. We will finish this year with students in Grades 6-8 participating in the Gauss Math Contest from Waterloo University!
