From the Elementary Principal

It has been a wonderful week that has brought a buzz of excitement from many of our Elementary students. In the first instance, our Grade 5 students took the opportunity to complete a group Mini X. A small research project undertaken in groups to gain experience with many of the component parts of the PYP Exhibition that will be launched very soon.
The students have been researching different ecosystems, creating interactive visuals before and after dioramas, exploring tech tools that could be used later, but also gaining valuable experience talking to and presenting to adults and students. As I was talking to some Grade 5 students afterwards, they highlighted that they really needed to know what ecosystems were and think about how they were going to explain them to the younger students using language that they would understand. This was a valuable lesson for later in semester 2, when they present their PYP Exhibition learning.
The other buzz has been around the Lunar New Year assembly. The students have been enthusiastic about their performances and as you will see from the video of their performances, these practices were worthwhile. The assembly was a real team effort between both our Elementary and Secondary Schools ably led by our Chinese departments with significant input from our Performing Arts team.
The Secondary Orchestra set the tone for the assembly, performing the Malaysian National Anthem, the popular Korean folk song Doraji followed by “Butter” from BTS. Our Elementary students chipped in with singing and dance performances from Grade 2, Grade 5, and our EY students performed a sign language dance which brought a smile to my face. Grade 4 performed a Vietnamese song, Xúc xắc xúc xẻ with the Grade 1 students rounding out the assembly with a fashion show number with the IGBIS staff. With our Secondary students’ rock band and dance group performing, it was an assembly to remember. A big thanks to all those involved in making it a success.
In the Secondary Principal’s section, Ms Sandy has shared some information about the upcoming sports fixtures. If your child in ES is taking part in any IGBIS sports teams, there is a consent form to be completed that you can access in that newsletter section.

This Week in Secondary

Service Day
After several COVID years, thanks to Sophie in Grade 10, we are re-introducing our Service Day. This year, it will happen on Friday, 3 February 2023. All students from Grades 6 to 11 will be off-schedule on this day so that they can engage in some direct service activities. There is a range of activities, including working with orphans, stray animals, environmental groups, refugees, aged care, etc. Students will be able to choose their preferred service activity via a sign-up form.
Students will have two opportunities to sign up for their preferred service activity.
- Sign-up 1 – Between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Thursday, 26 January 2023
- Sign-up 2 – During lunch (12:45 pm to 1:40 pm) on Friday, 27 January 2023
- We will allocate any students who miss both of these sign-up opportunities.
Students will come in free dress (appropriate to their chosen activity) and will need to bring a water bottle and lunch. Here’s a link to a Service Day slide deck that outlines the service opportunities available on the day. More information to follow.
Trips Update
As you know, we are in a holding pattern with our Grades 6 to 11 residential trips due to a recent memo from the Selangor branch of the MOE. The memo tells us that there can be no overnight trips with outdoor activities until further notice. This is no doubt a reaction to the devastating landslides in December. We’ve spoken to the MOE and we’ve written to see if we can get approval for our trips as we are not in tents, flood or landslide-prone areas. We have our fingers and toes crossed that we hear back quickly. For now, you don’t need to do anything. Once we hear back from the MOE, we’ll be back in contact. If we do get approval, we may need to move quickly to get payment from some of you (or to return your payment if the trips get cancelled). Our trips are currently scheduled for Monday, 27 February 2023 to Friday, 3 March 2023. Grades 6 & 7 to Lumut, Grades 8 & 9 to Gopeng (a new location – more info to follow if we are given permission to travel), and Grades 10 & 11 to Cherating.
NOTE: The Grade 12 trip to Penang (1 March 2023 to 3 March 2023) will go ahead as planned.
Lunar New Year
Today (Friday), we have lots of students and teachers dressed up for LNY. We’ll have the assembly this afternoon and then a 5-day break to celebrate the beginning of the “Year of the Rabbit.” On Thursday, 2 February 2023, we will be treated to an LNY lion dance on the field during the break (9:35 am to 10:00 am). The whole school will be out on the field at that time if you would like to join us.
ES and SS Sports (Season 2)

Our Season 2 sports are underway, with sporting fixtures right around the corner. The schedule can be found below. There may be some additional fixtures pop up, and we will communicate those with athletes and their families. We ask that all parents of our athletes complete the Parent Information/Consent form HERE.
We are excited to see more tournaments and fixtures scheduled for this season. We had good support from our teams during Season 1, and we hope to see more of you soon cheering on our Phoenix squads!
Yearbook Photos
We will be taking Yearbook photos of students during the week of Tuesday, 7 February 2023 to Friday, 10 February 2023. (Remember that Monday, 6 February 2023 is now a public holiday). Secondary students will get their photos taken on Tuesday, 7 February 2023 and Wednesday, 8 February 2023 with catch-up photos possible on Friday, 10 February 2023 (detailed schedule to follow). Hopefully, we will be able to take group photos this year as well as individual photos.
Community Project
Our MYP and DP design teacher and I have met with all the Grade 8 community project groups this week. There are some fabulous project ideas, with some groups much further down the track than others. We will send some feedback and the next steps to each group (and cc parents). A reminder that we are running a Grade 8 parent CP meeting on Friday, 27 January 2023 (8:15 am to 9:15 am in the PVO). Hope to see lots of Grade 8 parents there.

Congratulations to everyone who has completed an application thus far! October – January is when a majority of application deadlines occur, and the Grade 12 students have done a wonderful job completing applications. As of today, our students have applied to a total of 164 colleges and universities throughout the world.

Please keep in mind that I do NOT have access to your applications; thus, if you want me to look over your application, you need to make an appointment with me. Our next round of holidays runs from Saturday, 4 March 2023 – Monday, 13 March 2023, please plan accordingly.
