February 23, 2024From the Counselling Team
Given that it has only been a two-day week it could be easy to think that there is not much to share, however, that is never the case. We continue to move through February with the “Our Relationships” theme. One of the reasons why we chose Healthy Relationships as our focus for February is because that is when Valentine's Day falls. Healthy relationships are about far more than Romantic Relationships. As counsellors, we are constantly helping our young people to negotiate all of the relationships in their lives. We do this through our daily interactions with students, the classes we teach, our social media posts, and the interactive displays we create around the school.
Today, I want to share some of the messages in one of our displays. It is titled ‘Healthy Relationships from The Lion King’. Take a look at the information presented here:
Here are some of the messages that we are focusing on:
This is not a complete list, but a helpful guide and a few hints to help us all navigate the relationships in our lives.
I deliberately chose to put ‘showing appreciation’ as the final hint because this sits at the centre of so many of my beliefs about building positive relationships. As I have shared previously, the more we model and demonstrate these attributes the more likely we are to see them demonstrated by others.
In a week that was only two days at school, these are just a few of the amazing things that I saw students do that I really appreciated:
Our grade 6 students stepping up and being risk takers and presenting to the Grade 5 about what it is like to be involved in the PYP Exhibition
Student ambassadors and Student council creating and facilitating activities that encouraged fun, connection and celebrating friendship.
Student involvement in getting ready to re-launch ‘laughter at lunchtime.’
As we move into the weekend, take some time to think about the relationships in your life, especially what you do to show appreciation and see if there are any lessons you can learn from The Lion King.
Best Regards
